Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) are proud to be introducing the Kiki Kiwi and Friends: The Travelling Trash programme, free, into to schools this term. The programme aims to educate children (aged 5-11 years) on the impact of litter in the environment and the importance of putting litter in the bin. The programme will be distributed to all primary and intermediate schools from this week, with the materials part-funded by the Ministry of Education and Ministry for the Environment.
On Friday 27 July, Minister Hipkins attended the launch event at Plateau School, in Te Marua, Upper Hutt. Kiki was extremely well received by all involved and Plateau School students loved the opportunity to meet Kiki, and share their own anti-littering ideas. KNZB have launched the programme as part of the reinvigoration of their litter awareness and behaviour change campaigns of yesteryear, that encouraged everyone to “Do The Right Thing” and “Be a Tidy Kiwi”.
KNZB Education Manager, Christine White says; “To achieve widespread behaviour change, we are using our Mama Nature campaign to target the general population and visitors to New Zealand. The purpose of introducing a schools programme is to teach children that throwing something away, doesn’t make it go away, as it can travel far across the planet. It also teaches them that there is something they can do about it, in a fun and engaging way.”
The programme is split into three themes and six inquiry questions that look at the impact of litter on a local, national and global level. It weaves in the key competencies, visions and principles of the New Zealand Curriculum and, as students learn to manage their own litter, they become connected to the land & environment, and participate with their local community.
A full Kiki Kiwi and Friends Litter Less resource pack will be distributed to all primary and intermediate schools, from this week. All of the resources are available for download now, at www.litterless.knzb.org.nz
